The joint research of the Institute and Sixth Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University - key technological innovation and promotion in rectal cancer treatment based on anal and sexual function protection won the second prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award, which is the first national-level research project rewarded.
2016 Digestive Disease Week of Young Talent forum was jointly sponsored by Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and Guangdong Institute of Gastroenterology. It tended to gather experts and young scholars in the field of gastrointestinal diseases both at home and abroad through special reports, academic discussions and talent talks to discuss the frontiers and hot issues of scientific research on gastrointestinal diseases.
In March 2016, Professor Menghong Lee was selected into the twelfth batch of "Thousand Talents Program" by the Organization Department of CPC Central Committee. This is the first "Thousand Talents Program" expert. Professor Menghong Lee’s National Natural Science Foundation project - study of intestinal flora affecting development of colorectal cancer and chemosensitivity was funded and the first key project of the Institute funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China
In 2015, the Institute invited Menghong Lee lifelong professor in MD Anderson Cancer Center and Sun Yat-sen University 's Hundred Talents Program leader as its executive director.
In 2014, we conducted a microbiology research with Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the field of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease,three genetic detection programs were successfully developed by the molecular diagnostic laboratory of the Institute. These included: detection of exon 3 and 4 mutations in MSAS and KRAS genes by multiplex fluorescent PCR, detection of exon 2, 3 and 4 mutations in NRAS gene. We also applied for 1 invention patent.
In November 2013, we held the Sino-Dutch Gastrointestinal Oncology Symposium and Cooperation and Exchange, and conducted the academic exchange with Professor Ad Geurts van Kessel, Nijmegen University Medical Center, Netherlands, and reached the cooperation agreement.
In August 2013, the Institute was relocated to the 6th to the 9th floors of Building 3, Sixth Affiliated University of Sun Yat-sen University, covering an area of about 5000㎡. The total value of equipment was about 20 million yuan.
In January 2013, Professor Hongzhi Zou was invited to the SUSU Research Institute of Gastroenterology of Sun Yat-sen University for full time scientific research. In April 2013, Guangdong Provincial Editorial Board discussed and agreed to set up the Guangdong Provincial/Research Institute of Gastroenterology. It is a public institution under the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.
Basic and clinical serial researches on colorectal inflammation and tumor from Professor Ping Lan 's team won the first prize of Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award in 2012.
In 2011, our institute was relocated to the School of Pharmacy and covered an area of about 1000㎡with the total value of equipment being about 5 million yuan, we invited famous professor Aikichi Iwamoto with Overseas Famous Teacher Project approved by the Ministry of Education.
In 2009, Sun Yat-sen University invited Professor Huanliang Liu from the University of Miami in the United States as a regular researcher and executive director.In order to improve our quality and level of medical services, the Institute established the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory in 2009.Professor Lee Hartwell of Fred Hutchinson Research Center (winner of Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2001 and global advocate of individualized treatment) led a team to visit our institute for the first time and he signed a letter of intent with us to jointly set up Colorectal Cancer Biosignal Institute.
Guangdong Research Institute of Gastroenterology was founded in April 2007, also known as Institute of Gastroenterology of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU RIG). Wang Jianping was as director, Wang Lei executive deputy director, Lan Ping deputy director, and Wu Xiaojian secretary. The Institute is located in floors 3-4, building 4, the Sixth Affiliated Hospital , Sun Yat-sen University, 400㎡each floor. Total value of equipment was about 200 million yuan.
