Guangdong Institute of Gastroenterology (known previously as Institute of Gastroenterology of Sun Yat-sen University) was founded in April 2007 with the approval from Sun Yat-sen University. Professor Wang Jianping was director, Professor Wang Lei deputy executive director, Professor Lan Ping deputy director, and Professor Wu Xiaojian secretary. Its official and experimental sites were in Floors 3-4, Building 4, Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, about 400m2 each floor. The total value of equipment was about 2 million yuan at that time. The Institute is engaged in gastrointestinal disease research.
In July 2009, the Institute of Gastroenterology of Sun Yat-sen University invited Professor Liu Huanliang as PI from the University of Miami in the United States. He is the first full-time PI to be introduced from abroad. He served as deputy executive director and worked with Professor Wang Lei deputy executive director to jointly manage the Institute's daily and scientific research work. In May 2012, Professor Zou Hongzhi was introduced to the Institute for full-time scientific research and served as deputy director.
In April 2013, the Office of Organization Committee of Guangdong Province discussed and agreed to set up the Guangdong Institute of Gastroenterology as the public welfare unit directly under the Sixth Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University. Since then, the Institute of Gastroenterology of Sun Yat-sen University has been a provincial public unit.
The establishment of the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Gastroenterology is intended to assist the government in the development of prevention and control strategies for common multiple diseases in the gastrointestinal field in Guangdong Province, to promote and direct the implementation of prevention and control work, to integrate the resources of various research institutes in the province, strengthen cooperation and deepens the basic clinical research on gastrointestinal diseases; to set up the province's database on gastrointestinal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, radioactive enteritis and other diseases in order to provide the basis for the development of prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and health insurance policies; to develop the guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in Guangdong Province and promote their implementation, and improve the level of diagnosis and treatment in the province; to cultivate all kinds of relevant personnel in this field of research while relying on the 6th Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.
In April 2016, in the meeting attended by the president and the secretary of Sixth Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University, it was decided that Professor Wang Jianping served as honorary director and Professor Lan Ping director of Guangdong Institute of Gastroenterology.
Basic requirements of PI: A holder of doctoral degree or senior professional title or a doctoral tutor who meets one of the following conditions may act as an independent PI. A PI possesses relatively independent lab space and is equipped with a full-time research assistant (holder of doctoral degree, associate professor or lecturer) and a technician (bachelor or master's degree). Moreover:
(1) For an academician or "973" chief scientist, he will be configured with 5 additional assistants;
(2) For a high-level associate professor abroad who is under the age of 50 or above, or a State Outstanding Youth or a Cheung Kong scholar, or a professor in Thousand Talent Program of Central Organization Department, or an export having a researching funding of 10 million yuan or above, he will be configured with additional 3 assistants;
(3) For a winner for the first prize of provincial and ministerial science and technology awards (ranked first), a high-level assistant professor abroad under the age of 40 years or above, a talent in Thousand Talent Program of Central Organization Department, a top talent from Central Organization Department, an excellent young people from Fund Commission, a talent in New Century Talents Program of Ministry of Education, or talent who is not yet selected for the above various talent programs but possesses a single longitudinal project of 2 million yuan or above, he will be configured with 1 additional assistant;
(4) For a profession introduced by Hundred Talents Program of Sun Yat-sen University, he will be not additionally staffed;
(5) For a single longitudinal project of less than 2 million yuan or projects with a total amount of less than 5 million yuan, no additional staffing will be performed.
All supporting funds for the project are not included in the above total amount of funds.
PI will employ research assistants and technicians according to work needs. The work load, research awards, research results and thesis signatures of task force members are decided by PI. PI is responsible for the Institute. Also, the flexible working hours are adopted for research assistants and technicians. PI is responsible for attendance registration and assessment.
March 18, 2011, the Institute relocated from Building 4 of Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University to School of Pharmacy of said University with an area of about 1,000m2 and total value of equipment about 5 million yuan. August 6, 2013, The Institute moved from School of Pharmacy back to the current location - Floors 6-9, Building 3 with an area of about 5,000m2 with total value of equipment about 20 million yuan.
After relocating to the Hospital, the office and research conditions of the Institute are greatly improved. Based on the particularity of the intestinal environment (rich in microorganisms), and according to the national standards, we has built the P2-level bio-safety laboratory, not only improving the protection of the experimenters, but also expanding the range of scientific research projects undertaken. According to the principles of resource sharing and experimental technical functions, the laboratories are divided into the molecular biology laboratory, cell biology laboratory, and flow cytometry laboratory to provide more scientific and efficient platform support. The molecular diagnostic laboratory, which was founded in 2009, was formally moved into the dedicated area in July 2014, and passed the technical acceptance inspection organized by Guangdong Provincial Center for Clinical Laboratory in December the same year.
